This 15-year-old made my day
A knock on my door in the middle of a snow storm.

Good morning lovely people. You’re reading the revamped The Bright Side newsletter, a bi-weekly dose of calm and clarity in a noisy world.

We got a foot of fresh powder overnight.
My house had that cozy quiet of snow + Sunday morning. I was writing and drinking coffee.
Someone knocked on my door. A young man, maybe 17, stood outside, shovel in hand, BIG smile on his face. Not from my neighborhood.
Asked if he could shovel my drive and walkways. I usually do it myself. But all of me said yes.
I said sure, how much. He said $20.
Humble price. Humble guy.
I've always deeply admired people with work ethic and determination. He made me think about how simple and impressive (not easy) the hustle of entrepreneurship is.
And you know what? He probably feels more clear-headed and alive because he's doing honest work with his hands and body.
Lungs pumping, blood circulating, out in crisp Vermont air with the beauty of snow all around.
Maybe he would not describe it this way? I am writing this while he is outside. I will ask him…

He did.
His name is Caleb. He’s 15, in middle school.
I asked him for his number. He pulled out a vintage phone and had to look in his settings to remember his number. Said he’s rarely on his phone, would rather be outside working.
I have a new friend…
🤠 YOUR TURN.

I’ll feature a couple responses in the next newsletter.

A good argument for cooking and eating fresh, unprocessed foods and regular use of probiotics…
With colorectal cancer rates rising among younger Americans, a large study shows eating yogurt may make your gut healthier and reduce your risk.
I love how a simple $20 job can say so much about a person.
Maybe this week you'll notice all the quiet effort happening around you—the barista who knows your order by heart, that friend who shows up even when they’re exhausted, the times you pushed through on something that mattered instead of taking the easy way out.
Wherever you are, whatever you're up to, I'm rooting for you.☺️
